Nobody could have blamed Sonny Gray for checking to see if he was really wearing a Yankees’ road uniform instead of the green, yellow and white outfit he left in Oakland.
After leaving the A’s, who led the majors in errors and had the second worst team batting Adidas Bryan Trottier Authentic Jersey average entering Thursday night’s action, Gray had to believe the defense and bats of his new team would be an improvement.
Clearly, they weren’t. The Yankees committed three first-inning errors and were toyed with by Indians right-hander Corey Kluber on the way to a 5-1 defeat in front of 28,124 at Progressive Field.
Gray allowed four runs (two earned), four hits, walked three and struck out six in a half-dozen innings. He is 0-1 as a Yankee and 6-6 overall in 17 starts this season.
Gray watched first baseman Chase Headley, second baseman Tyler Wade and right fielder Clint Frazier make Image errors within the first four batters of the home first inning.
As for Kluber, he continued to dominate at home where he is 7-1 in 11 starts this season. His complete-game effort, highlighted by allowing just three hits and whiffing 11, was Kluber’s third of the year. He blanked the Yankees through six innings and lost a shutout when Gary Sanchez, who looked ill striking out in the second and fourth innings, homered with the bases empty in the seventh. Kluber is 4-1 in six career Alexei Kovalev Womens Jersey starts against the Yankees.
The 57-50 Yankees, who played without Aaron Judge, Matt Holliday and Todd Frazier in the lineup due to their dead bats, have lost three straight and are 1-3 since acquiring Gray on Monday.
The defending AL champion Indians improved to 58-48 and started the game with a 2 ?-game lead over the second-place Royals in the AL Central.
Francisco Lindor’s solo homer off Chasen Shreve in the seventh extended the Indians’ lead to 5-1.
Yan Gomes’ two-out, two-run double high off the left-field wall upped the Indians’ lead to 4-0 in the sixth, and with the way Kluber was toying with the Yankees’ hitters through six, that deficit had to feel a whole lot bigger.
Gray retired Jose Ramirez and Edwin Encarnacion to open the home sixth in front of walking Carlos Santana and giving up a single to right to Brandon Guyer. Gomes, a .223 hitter batting eighth, jumped on Gray’s first pitch and came within Charles Mann Youth Jersey feet of a three-run homer. Gray left Guyer at third and exited the inning trailing by four.
